The 5-1 Briefly, because I want to dwell on it as much as you do. But I'll give you one reason for each goal conceded, why I think we were so roundly battered on Sunday:
-Not playing defensive midfielders against such a skillful attacking team.
-Playing instead lazy Croatians in the midfield, one of which can't be arsed to assist the defence and one of which has never assisted the defence.
-Playing Corluka as our entire right wing for most of the second half.
-Relying on Crouch for knockdowns and scraps as a means of getting goals.
-Dzeko had a blinder.
Right, enough of that, moving on...
The Tottenham Twats - Modric & Redknapp
Modric is obviously disrupting the team, and did not once look happy on Sunday, regularly giving out to his team mates. How is it that a professional footballer, someone who has been playing football their entire life, can think that coming in to the managers office hours before a match and telling him that his "head is not right to play" is an acceptable course of action. A course of action that will result in the manager saying, "Fine, you just pop off home, put your feet up with a mug of hot coco, and wait for me to call and let you know to pop over to Chelsea for a little medical. Don't worry about your wages, we'll continue to pay you whilst you continue to disrupt the team and attempt to engineer a move away from the club." Obviously not.
Similarly, why is Redknapp, after a 5-1 drubbing at home, giving yet more sound bites to the media by telling the world about the above situation?! Telling us not to boo him before the game and then telling us he asked not to play after the match?! Keep it behind closed doors, and in future if a journalist asks about one of your players, tell them to shove their questions like any other manager does. Orrrrrr.... is Redknapp, self-preservationist extraordinaire, attempting to distance himself from any blame that may be placed at his feet for said 5-1 loss, and instead placing it at the lazy Croatian feet of Modric. Hmm.
Both of them are making me sick. I wish we'd replaced Modric, but it's too late now, and I wish Levy would force Redknapp to quit writing for the Sun newspaper and to not answer questions that undermine the cohesion of the team and the players within it.
Van Der Vaart's Hamsting Injury
After Rafa decided to sub himself out of the game against Man City, I initially thought he'd just had enough and was throwing a Modric-esq sulk. Later we find out that it was a hamstring injury that will keep him out for several weeks. But could this be a blessing in disguise? All of a sudden, we don't have to play 4-4-1-1 anymore to accommodate VDV, we can play 4-4-2 with Adebayor plus one other up front and get back to scoring goals. 4-4-2 saw us break into the promised land of the Champions League two seasons ago. 4-4-1-1 saw us fall out of the top four without putting up a fight. I'm beginning to see why VDV was sold to us for such a small amount of money for someone of his suspiciously good talents. £8M seemed to good to be true. It was, it's forced us to play in this 4-4-1-1 formation that isolates the attack and results in less goals scored. And goals, are the things that they teach you on day one of football manager boot camp, that are key to winning football matches.![]() |
